Indy West Wrestling promotes scholarship and citizenship and helps develop confidence, discipline, hard work, and other life skills in youth ages K-12 through wrestling. IWW funds $6,000 in annual scholarships through proceeds raised at the Alan Goddard Memorial golf outing. The charity golf outing has over 120 players many of who are active in the community as teachers, coaches, and mentors. Coach Goddard was a teacher and coach in Wayne Township for over 35 years and the scholarship is a way for to continue his legacy to students at the school where he devoted his entire teaching career.
The scholarship started off as the Shuler Scholarship. Brian Shuler was the 155 pound sectional champion on the undefeated 1983 team. Brian lost his life shortly after graduation. The Shuler family was the primary sponsor of this scholarship for 24 years. Coach Goddard co-founded Indy West Wrestling, coached in Wayne Township for almost 40 years and is a member of the Indiana High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. Coach passed away in 2014 at which point we did not award a scholarship. In 2015 we renamed the scholarship in coaches honor and increased the amount based on academic achievement.
Our annual $2500 scholarship helps a graduating Ben Davis Senior apply this money to a college or trade school of their choice. Starting in 2022, we started the IWW / Goddard Female High School Wrestling Scholarship, which is a $500 scholarship that goes to a top awarded Senior female wrestler in the state of Indiana.
Additional proceeds benefit economically challenged Wayne Township families pay for additional summer camp instruction as well as school fees associated with extra-curricular activities. Funds help these kids have life experiences they might miss due to lack of resources.
